When I was getting radiation treatment for breast cancer I lost my ability to replicate through hand/eye coordination. What I'd once taken for granted now was frustrating and quite difficult. What brought it was when fellow artist Malia Jensen curated me into a Portrait/Self Portrait Drawing exhibit was part of the city-wide "Core Sample" project in 2003. I did many portraits and self-portraits that included strange patterned orbs. I've since found out that our base brain, or reptilian brain, sees pattern more easily. By including these orbs from my inner eye, I was able to regain my replication skill.
